Ice Baths in Ayurveda

Ice baths have been known to have beneficial properties for the body by ancient cultures. They have recently been made vogue again by Wim Hof. Since then there has been a lot of interest in ice baths and their benefits. Ice baths were a part of Ayurveda culture thought they might not have been know as ‘ice baths’.

It is well known that Ayurveda recommends at least two baths per day. The first bath was supposed to be taken at 4am at the beginning of the Brahma Kaal. It was a cold water bath that refreshed the body and acted as a natural wake up call to the mind. In 2023 we know the scientific reason behind doing this. The ice bath releases dopamine 2.5x more than the baseline which meant you would have increased energy and lots of motivation for the day ahead.

Bathing in water used to signify a release of the stagnant energies in your body. This is why yogis still go to the Ganga and take a dip in the waters. Once your brain adapt to the initial shock of the water you will go into a deep meditative space. This state of mind in incredibly powerful for meditation and chanting.

Recently, lots of self proclaimed Ayurveda experts have been saying ice baths are not beneficial and the body is more comfortable with hot baths. This has been unequivocally proven wrong by science. Ice baths and cold baths are incredibly beneficial for our bodies.

Our clubs have ice baths are 15 to 12 degree Celsius. After the ice bath its recommended to let the body heat up by itself. Your body is going to feel the increased dopamine effect for 4-5 hours during which time your motivation and energy will be very high.
